Deadpool and Wolverine are finally here, and they have officially altered the Marvel history forever. If you’ve already watched the film, you’ll know that, due to some TVA timeline pranks and knowing allusions to previous X-Men Fox films, the Marvel Phase 5 film turns the Multiverse on its head like never before. That means there are lots of things to explain if you ever intend to see all of the Marvel films in sequence again, buddies.
Deadpool and Wolverine is a buddy comedy, certainly, but it’s also a fast-paced trip owing to all of the Wolverine and Deadpool varieties. If you blink once, you’ll lose out on a lot of mythology and most likely a Deadpool appearance or two. With that in mind, we’ve decided to make your moviegoing experience a lot smoother with our helpful advice!
Here’s all you need to know about Deadpool and Wolverine. From reviews to trailers, characters, and more story elements, we have done the custodians of The Sacred Timeline proud and have all of the answers right here.
Deadpool and Wolverine reviews
In our Deadpool and Wolverine review, we rated the Marvel film an amazing four stars. We honestly believe that this film is a return to form in MCU writing: The MCU’s self-appointed messiah may not have achieved a total course correction, but he does provide an action-packed, gag-filled crowd-pleaser that offers the series a much-needed boost.
At the time of writing, reviewers seem to agree with us, since Deadpool and Wolverine has an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, there are also many bad reviews. The Independent termed the picture “tedious,” while The Hollywood Reporter characterized it as “messy and overstuffed.”
Only time will tell whether the film can sustain its high score as additional reviews come in. So, stay tuned as we keep you up to speed on everything Marvel-related news!
Deadpool and Wolverine release date
Deadpool and Wolverine arrived in UK cinemas on July 25, before hopping over the pond to US theaters on July 26.
Their release date was subsequently pushed back to May 3 of that year as Disney changed their release schedule in response to the WGA strike, before being set for July 2024 when the SAG-AFTRA strike concluded. The film is part of Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Motion Picture Association granted it a R classification, which is a first for the MCU. In August, Levy said that the film will not have a director’s cut since the theatrical version was precisely what he intended to do.
Movie Trailer
The first Deadpool and Wolverine video trailer debuted during the 2024 Super Bowl, providing our first R-rated glimpse at Wade Wilson’s comeback. Not only did it hint at the film’s premise, but it was also filled with veiled references to the larger MCU. Check out our Deadpool trailer Easter egg round-up for all of the ones we discovered, including a reference to Avengers: Secret Wars and what all those Loki connections may imply.
A second teaser was screened exclusively to CinemaCon 2024 attendees. It, like the previous, had lots of gore and bloodshed, as well as limp dick jokes, and it also offered us our first glimpse of Cassandra Nova. Of course, all of these previews disclose just a fraction of Deadpool and Wolverine’s shocks, so be sure to see the film for yourself!
Movie Plot
While we don’t want to give away too many spoilers, the Deadpool and Wolverine story is rife with chronology implications. So, before we go into the nitty-gritty specifics, consider this a little spoiler warning: if you haven’t watched the film yet, turn back now!
If you’re still here, let’s get started! Deadpool and Wolverine concentrate on the issue of timeline fidelity. What are the consequences of all the Marvel films released previous to the MCU? Deadpool finds out when his new life as a car salesperson is interrupted by a TVA visit. Wade Wilson realizes that his chronology is in peril since the anchor being who kept his reality alive has died. Who is that anchor, you could ask? This is Logan, also known as Mister Wolverine. Yes, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has returned after his apparent death in Logan (see our Logan review if you need a reminder), and this time he’s wearing a pretty odd yellow outfit.
In order to rescue everyone, he loves about, Deadpool must journey across many eras, join Wolverine before his world vanishes, and battle a slew of abandoned MCU villains. Cassandra Nova, Professor Xavier’s bald-headed twin sister, is the major antagonist that the trio must defeat if they are to save their history. Now, there are several appearances and Deadpool and Wolverine versions that really make this picture unique. If you are interested in those faces and identities, please go to our guides, since we do not wish to provide any big spoilers here.
We can tell you that Deadpool and Wolverine’s story takes place mostly in March 2024 in the present reality. And Logan’s finale (also known as one of the finest X-Men films of all time) is still canon, at least for one Wolverine variation. So, you may continue to watch all of Fox’s X-Men films in chronological sequence with confidence.

Movie Budget
The budget for Deadpool & Wolverine is reportedly $200 million, according to Variety. This is about average for the MCU’s modern non-Avengers movies, with The Numbers putting it on a par with the Multiverse Saga’s biggest installments, including Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. This somewhat standardized budget for the MCU’s higher-profile movies helps to establish the kind of production value that can be expected.
On top of the budget is a reported marketing spend of $100 million. That Marvel spent half of the movie’s total budget on marketing is no real surprise given the immense level of publicity that has been seen throughout Spring and Summer 2024, which included myriad off-piste brand partnerships (such as the cheeky Xbox controller) and a sprawling press tour from the filmmakers. Given Marvel Studios is reeling from a historic box office flop in Fall 2023, it is safe to say that the pressure is on for Deadpool & Wolverine to stabilize Marvel’s bottom line.
